Phonics

At Riverside, we use the Oxford Reading Tree Floppy's Phonics Teaching Programme and associated reading scheme.

Floppy's phonics is a comprehensive and systematic phonics teaching programme is used daily to rigorously teach and practise phonics and enable children to read fluently by the end of KS1. .It includes motivational practice through fully decodable fiction and non-fiction texts correlated to Oxford Reading Tree Stages 1-6.

Daily routines are established for blending, spelling and handwriting so that children learn, revise and practise every letter-sound correspondence following the same process

  • Revise previous phonic knowledge
  • Hear and repeat new letter-sound correspondence in isolation, and in the context of a key word and picture
  • Blend simple words from left to right
  • Practise blending and saying the new sound in and out of the context of words independently and in small groups using pupil books
  • Practise new letter-sound correspondence with activity sheets, with further blending, writing and spelling routines
  • Read short, decodable ‘cumulative’ texts incorporating new letter-sound correspondences as they are learnt, and high frequency tricky words.
  • Practise phonics in context with decodable fiction and non-fiction books.
